Spain
This
red is 100% Garnacha, from the Calatayud region
in Spain. This wine weighs in with an alcohol level of 15.5% (oh
boy). I sipped on a bottle of the 2010 Bodegas
Breca Garnacha Breca.
This wine received 94 points from what some consider to be the Wine Prophet
himself (Robert Parker). I am not a Parker disciple and many times I find my
palate at odds with the Advocate. However, since Parker advised consumers
to “Fill their trunks with these beauties,” I wanted to try to get my hands on
a bottle. My guess is that finding this bottle will be be as hard as
getting a Cabbage Patch Kid® in the 80’s during Christmas. I
personally am not a score chaser, and to the contrary, I usually avoid wines
with such big score due to the massive retail push and price gouging.
This wine was below $20, so I decided I would go out of my comfort zone and
give this wine a spin.
On
the nose: Smoked pork (maybe I am hungry?). Dark raspberries and brown
sugar. Little bit of alcohol, but dissipates as time goes by. At
15.5% I would have thought it would be more off putting. 94 pts nose?
Palate:
Now I can see what Parker was thinking. Very balanced for a bottle under
$20. Usually have this balance in a bottle over $40+. Reminds me a
little of a baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape without the pepper, but has the
weight. Good length. If you can find this bottle I would buy some, but it
may be hard as everyone may have it in their trunks already as per Mr.
Parker. Happy hunting….
