Barolo
This red wine is from the Piedmont region of Italy. The
vineyard is located in the town of Castiglione Falletto in the village of
Garbelletta. The 2004 Barolo vintage came with great acclaim with Robert
Parker, the Wine Advocate, scoring the vintage as a whole 96
points. I enjoyed the 2004 Cavalier Bartolomeo Vigneti Solanotto
Altinasso Barolo at a restaurant in the East Village (Apiary, which has
no corkage fee on Mondays nights, score one for the oenophile out there. Chef Scott
Bryan, now at Apiary, used to be executive chef at Veritas in the mid
2000’s, for those of you keeping score at home). Only 750 cases
of this wine were made.
On the nose: Roses, very perfumed (bottle actually has a drawing
of a rose on the label – maybe an omen). Expensive leather, the type that
Louis Vuitton charges one “G” for a fancy handbag. Clementine
peel as well. Right out of the bottle, the wine is very fragrant. Little
tar. Really rustic.
Palate: Extremely dry. Wall of tannins. Could use some
time in the bottle (2-3 yrs) or a 2-3 hour decant. Dark red color.
No signs of bricking. Has a slight taste of pine sap. Very smooth
though. I had this with a Berkshire Pork Rib Chop with mascarpone
polenta, sautéed escarole, royal king trumpets (this chop would put a smile on
Fred Flintstone’s face)
