2000 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia

Barolo

This wine is from the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. The Barolo zone, where this wine is from, is nestled in the Langhe hills, a higher elevation with a cooler climate.  The DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) of Barolo has a very small footprint geographically as it is only 5 miles wide at its widest point.  The producer, Aldo Conterno, is considered to be the King of Barolo and has been producing wine for more than five generations.  The Granbussia Riserva is only produced in the best vintages and the grapes are hand-picked in mid-October.  Nebbiolo is the grape varietal.  I shared the 2000 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia just this past weekend with some very special folks

On the nose: Tar balls. Christmas tree pine sap. Beautiful color, light brown on the rim.  This is old school.  Picture Uncle Vito opening this up for a special occasion after hiding this gem in his basement for a quarter of a century.  Exudes class.

Palate: Cherry Coca-Cola.  The 2000 vintage was to be the greatest vintage ever in Barolo, receiving a perfect 100pt score as a vintage from Wine Spectator.  This bottle is a monster.  60+ second finish.  Prototypical Barolo.  Take some Cellas® Chocolate Covered Cherries and put them in the microwave for 15 seconds, then into a bowl and add some Twizzlers.  Take a couple spoonfuls.
