Montefalco
This red wine is from the Umbria region of Italy. This wine
is not DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) as it is not
100% Sagrantino, but rather a blend of Sagrantino,
Sangiovese and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Paolo Bea (the man,
the myth) is the patriarch of the vineyard, but has shared his knowledge with
his two sons, Giuseppe & Giampiero, so that the tradition can carry
on. Giampiero Bea is the wine maker at the moment. I enjoyed this bottle of 2003 Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Vigna Pipparello at a fancy Italian Restaurant run by a now skinny bald triathlete restaurateur on 10th Ave and West 16th St in NYC for my wife’s birthday a couple years back. This wine was in contact with grape skins for 42 days, was in stainless steel vats for a year and then aged two years in cask.
On the nose: Expensive cedar closet smell. Button mushroom
consommé. Balanced. Has all you would expect in an Italian wine,
but has some extra. Green tea leaves and cloves. Nose has many
layers. Would open the bottle at least 2 hours before consumption as I
feel it would benefit from some air.
Palate: Dark brooding color. Dry as a bone. Beef Jerky. Snap
into a Slim Jim®, Randy Macho Man Savage style. 2003 in Italy was a very hot
vintage, shows here as it is super ripe. Tastes nice, but not sure this will
hold up over time. 5-7 year drinking window.
