This red wine is from the Piedmont region in Italy. I had a bottle of the 2007 Azienda Agricola Trinchero Barbera d'Asti Superiore. This particular wine comes from 20-year old vines and the vineyard has been hanging around since the 19th century in some form or another. Now it belongs to Renato and Ezio Trinchero. It is considered a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). Barbera is many times blended with Barolo and Barberesco to add color. This wine is 100% Barbera and the virtues of this grape come to the forefront with this bottle.
On the nose: Cherry and sugar
reduction. Dried strawberries. No mistaking this as an Italian red
wine from the nose. Smell doesn’t really get better with
time. I would recommend drinking from the bottle, no need to decant.
Palate: Not that dry. Peppery
plums. Round and rich. Has a very lively finish, which isn’t
long, but holds your attention. Medium body. Color is light red. As
it’s from the 2007 vintage, I am not surprised by the lightness in
color. I would pair this with some pappardelle with wild boar ragu.
Can’t find some wild boar at your local supermarket? Then you must book
some tickets on the next Alitalia® plane out of JFK….
